Examples of the joy I bring to my thesis supervisor:
  • "The cabinet that contains all our money wasn't locked?!"
  • "Yeah so I need like...$300 to pay my participants this week..."
  • "Instead of going home and eating dinner, it would be awesome if you could come to the lab at 10: 30 p.m. on a Friday!"
  • "You know the expensive-looking driving simulator we have? The steering wheel broke today."
  • "So you know how the computer is supposed to record those responses to the questionnaires? Did not happen."
Well, it's a good thing sleep deprivation doesn't affect my ability to function or anything!

My first blood donation! So many epic things happen to my left arm--it's going to become the most epic left arm ever.

Anyway, arrived at clinic, signed in, they pricked my finger to test the iron levels--I aced it and then answered a bunch of questions about sex, drugs, and rock and roll, and diseases--all of which I ticked "no" to because I'm so freakin' pure and virtuous.

Then they took my heart rate and blood pressure--can't remember why, and then I was told to read this pamphlet that's supposed to provide information and scare me out of donating at the same time. But I'm too excited to care about trivial things like nerve damage, so on to the next step I go!

So I get on the chair and had my skin cleaned for 20 seconds--it was pretty hilarious because they had a timer there and I was cleaned for exactly 20 seconds. I now have the cleanest patch of skin on my left arm ever!

After a bunch of other stuff happened, they finally got the huge needle in my arm. But the woman kept moving it in an out because she couldn't get my blood to come out... It was all so weird...at one point they had to re-insert the needle in my arm--which kinda hurt a lot. And I had to squeeze this ball and every time I squeezed the needle moved. It felt like a sci-fi movie...

In the end they couldn't get the full 500mL from me 'cause my line clotted...at one point the woman told me my veins were small and I wanted to go "DON'T BLAME YOUR INCOMPETENCE ON MY VEINS" but I guess it's still kinda my fault because I didn't drink enough water the day before.

Overall, it was still fun because I got free food and a snazzy pin! I already set up my next appointment--next time I'll drink lots of water and do this properly!

@ 8: 23 p.m. - 2 hours and 22 minutes until some wicked human experimentation happens at the sleep lab!

To celebrate this occasion, I've decide to leave the water deprivation out until next Saturday, because depriving 4 people of food, water, and sleep for 8 hours is much more satisfying than doing it to just one person!

@ 12: 04 a.m. - wicked human experimentation happening RIGHT NOW!

7 more hours to go!

@ 2: 06 a.m. - Okay the excitement has worn off...now I just want to die...

@ 4: 04 a.m. - In the sleep lab, no one can hear you scream

@ 6: 23 a.m. - ALMOST DONE! ALMOST DONE!! 9 more minutes! The excitement returns!

@ 11: 46 a.m. - Left lab at 6: 45 and talked very loudly during walk home with participant. Hope I didn't burst his eardrums on top of killing off his brain cells and his soul. At least he wasn't in the water deprivation condition.

Was late for my 11 a.m. participant. That was wonderful.

You know how when you scan your textbooks, you can't highlight the words on the page?

Well I managed to do it and it's so exciting that I had to blog about it!

My "epic events" tag sure is getting a good workout this year--I guess that's what chronic sleep deprivation does to a person's excitability!

The story of how I wasted 1.67 of an egg at 6 a.m. this morning:
  • dropped the first one...because apparently holding on with both hands weren't good enough
  • managed to hold on to the second one, but the egg whites spewed out as I was cracking

Pumpkin spice syrup in my iced coffee!
The Starbucks in the states are so much more fancy pants than the ones in Canada. I asked the barista what kind of syrup they had and she listed about a million things: vanilla, hazelnut, cinnamon dolce, caramel, raspberry, pumpkin spice, chai, and I think she also said mint. A million flavors--a million ways to reach happiness!

Anywhoo, my coffee came out rather orange. This morning I added it to my oatmeal and it turned my breakfast orange...so there's definitely something pumpkin-y/pumpkin-y colored in there!

In terms of smell...nothing distinctive. It smells sweet? And taste, it tasted smoother and I got a little bit of cinnamon when I really paid attention? I lack coffee-describing vocab.

Audiobooks, dude!

They are awesome. It's like a portable bookstore in my ipod. Makes the daily 1 hour 26 minutes of commuting much more awesome-filled. And distracts me from bus-sickness and subsequent puke-vandalism.

Speaking of buses, their drivers are fearless. I can't count the number of times I thought we were going to run over some school children, kill a puppy, or knock over lamp posts.

Oh, and we got a new cable modem and now my computer's internet is jacked up. So I am using my bro's computer. Hear me roar, cable company!
